Artist Collector Network is an ongoing data collecting and mapping project on the “nature” of the art world. Each collector whose name appears on the map was asked to provide a list of artists in their collection. Collectors are connected to each other on the diagram, which organizes itself by running as a software simulation, through the artists they have in common. The names of the collectors and artists position themselves on the screen according to these links, thus revealing the central actors in the field, hidden links and organic clusters. Artist Collector Network aims to reveal and question one of the fundamental dynamics of the art world – the relationship between artists and collectors. Arıkan investigates the art world, which is ruled by status, privilege and secrecy, by using contemporary technology that relies on the principles of free access, open sharing and participation. The first phase of his research was based on the network of Borusan Contemporary Museum, Istanbul, the second phase of the project included collectors and artists affiliated with Maçka Art Gallery, Istanbul. The work presents itself as a printed map or an interactive map on a touchscreen allowing visitors to navigate the dynamic network and explore the connections revealed in the process of the research.
