La Barca comprises 12 audiovisual works that I have created during my travels to 12 cities. The two parts presented here were filmed and sound-recorded on a train in Tokyo and Detroit. La Barca explores the effects of my imagination on a geographical environment, showing the common reality of my perception and what is perceived. In broad daylight, the train in Tokyo starts moving like a descending sun barque, and the station announcements sound like invocations. I realise: “In a barque she sails across the high lands of the past. The barque heads shimmer and glow at stern and bow, And that lights her unseeable passage. She calls to the spirits of this hour, And that is how we come to even hear her voice.” When I embark on the train in Detroit, all beings cease to exist. Streets and buildings are empty. The sun becomes the high light of isolation, illuminating the irredeemable void.
